Vilcanota White water rafting class III and class IV
(good for beginners and first times)

The Urubamba River (Rio Urumamba) is a river in Peru. A partially navigable headwater of the Amazon River, it rises in the Andes to the south-east of Cuzco near the Puno Region border ( in a place called La raya pass at 4338mts in beetween the Chimboya snowcapped(5489mts) and the Mosaya snowpeak at 5400mts , where it is called the Vilcanota River (Rio Vilcanota). In the Sacred Valley, between Písac and Ollantaytambo, it is also called the Wilcamayu (sacred river of the Inkas. It flows north-north-east for 724 kilometers before coalescing with the lower Apurímac River to form the Ucayali River.
The Urubamba is divided into Upper Urubamba and Lower Urubamba, the dividing feature being the Pongo(a place where all the river go in to the narrow canyon called El Pongo  de Mainique a famous whitewater long section where motor boats croos this sections  filled with rapids class I,II,III, in the canyon.
Most of the  comercial river trips are found in the upper Urubamband lower Urubamba river.We offer a multiday river trips and one day river trips. We have easy floating trips and demanding riverrafting trips in diferent sections of this mighty and mistical river.

Itinerary

We Pick you up at 8.00 am and then we drive south of the valley of Cusco into the mountains. One of the first views of the impressive snow capped peak of Ausangate (alt. 6384 mts,). On the way to our put-in point we pass several small villages until reaching one town called LLocllora (about 2 hours drive).In this place  we get ready the safety intructions and meeting our safety Kayak and  the safety equipment and gear for the rafting. We will begin our rafting trip and float for about 2 hours. We will begin with a rapid class III called the Introduction.After we pass the class III plus rapid called the curve.Later we will go in to the section class I and class II rapids.After a rest and great views of the Vilcanota mountain range, we run the canyon where we will find the good section with two class III rapids called the train of waves and the knife.Later we will find three class IV rapids.Our first rapid  is dificult, we stop for a scounting the rapid. Then we continue  down the river where we will find the Butterfly rapid, class IV. After that we have the brigde rapid class IV rapid. Later we take a break and  we have a beatifull views of the mountains We prepare our self for a good section of several small waves, a large rapid over 100 meters long with the continuation of great waves called the big waves section, is a class IV.Later we will. have two great class III plus rapids. After we will be running  class I and class II untill  the end.Also great chance to see some of the flora and fauna of the Andean valleys. After the we run the river, we have a place to change and have lunch. Drive back to Cusco in one and a half hours

    What to bring
    This is a list designed to advise you what equipment is appropriate to bring according to the weather conditions predominating at the time of your trip:

  • Flashlights (at least one headlamp among them).
  • Sun Block; Insect Repellent.
  • Towels (Small; cotton and hygienic).
  • Rain Gear (Pants and Jacket) though not necessary during the months of July and August.
  • A couple of pairs of socks, perhaps even an extra pair.
  • One pair of trousers for the evening plus two more pairs for trail use (zipp-offs).
  • Sandals for River use (Teva types).
  • Low ankle height hiking shoes or regular hiking boots (check the season).
  • Reading material.
  • Binoculars (always useful regardless of season and activity).
  • Bathing Suit.
  • Water Bottle (I liter capacity).
  • Good Sun glasses, perhaps two sets.
  • A bandana for neck protection.
  • A couple of sets of underwear (perhaps an extra pair).
  • Camera and plenty of film.
  • Passport (plus a couple of Xerox copies).
  • At least one short sleeve shirt and one or two long sleeve shirts (dark colors, depending on the place and destiny chosen).
  • A good waterproof jacket
